I work with a guy who bought one of these about 3 years ago with something like 60,000 miles on it. I was skeptical, but it's actually been a pretty reliable car.

I’ve test driven one... that V8 is wonderful. So many revs, and so smooth that it reminded me of an RX-8 rotary.

From what I’ve read, the chain tensioners aren’t an issue in these. They use a 32v head as opposed to the 40v head in the S4 and therefore the timing is different. They also rev a few hundred RPM higher, so the story is Audi used stronger tensioners and guides that don’t fail like they do on most of the other 4.2's. They are an early direct injection design, so you'd want it inspected for carbon and factor in a few grand for a walnut blast oit it needs it.

I was talking with my brother-in-law about what I’d do if I had a $25k budget. It all started because my wife says shed rather have me get another Audi than a WRX, so a WRX is about $25 so I looked into what I could get for $25k forth of Audi. Its slim picking when you want a manual.
